Home Office Essentials to Have a Productive Remote Workday

With the world slowly coming back to “normal,” major cities across the country are opening their streets, restaurants, schools, and of course, their offices. But some of the major tech companies (and companies in general) have made the decision to continue work-from-home mandates longer than was ever anticipated.

Organizations like Twitter even left the option open for some employees to work permanently from home and Google has closed their offices until 2021. Employees that were used to a desk, meeting rooms and hours of commute have been forced to think about what the office environment should look and feel like at home. These even longer work-from-home mandates have activated the creativity of people to make the most of their homes to create space to work and rest at the same time.

Atypical Digital is a pioneer of remote work and home office options because most of our collaborators were already working from home before the pandemic hit. We asked our employees what they think are the most essential items to have when the home is the office. Here’s what our people can’t live/work without.

Atypical Digitals’ top items for a great home office environment and productive day

1. Laptop stand

Working on your posture while working on your to-do list is equally important, so a laptop stand is a perfect way to elevate your screen and achieve better posture.

2. Extra monitor

If the laptop stand doesn’t do it for you, an extra monitor can do wonders, especially for developers and multitaskers that need to work on different things at the same time.

3. Wireless headphones

We love wireless headphones because they eliminate the dreaded cord tangle (and they let us get up and stretch during long zoom calls).  Even better are wireless headphones with noise cancellation to help block out the kids and dog!

4. Coffee warmer

Coffee or tea is an essential start to our workday! A coffee warmer can make sure your coffee is always hot no matter how distracted you get.

5. Cardioid mic

It may look like you’re starting a podcast, but this kind of microphone really helps isolate outside noise if you spend a lot of time on video calls.

6. Water bottle

Working or not, hydration is so important! Pick a water bottle that you love and you’ll keep it by your side all day.

7. Whiteboard

Whiteboards are great for meeting notes and for working out ideas.  There are lots of whiteboard options for your home office, from small notepad sizes for quick note-taking to large wall hanging types.

Desk whiteboard

A desk whiteboard is another great option. You can find one that is designed to sit perfectly between a keyboard and monitor and is angled for comfortable reading and writing.

8. Seat cushion

A great seat cushion is essential when you are sitting all day.  And don’t forget to have active pauses during the day!
